What If Wednesday – Artificial Intelligence

Welcome one and all to the first ever Secluded Habitat “What if Wednesday”. If you are unaware of what What if Wenesday is all about see my original post on the idea here.
The moment that I had this idea, I begun writing up a massive list of ideas for topics that we could discuss. I have a few good ones that my readers mentioned so I think that I might alternate between ones that I have thought up myself and ones that have been suggested.
So, this weeks question is – “What if an artificial intelligence being was created that had the same brain and learning capacity as a human?”
My Thoughts:
I know a lot of people are going to instantly think that the world would end but I wanted to throw an interesting spin to the much debated topic. I think that if this occurred a new era in creativity would be born. I have often thought that there is only a finite amount of art, movies, and music that could be created, I wonder how this would be affected by a superhuman brain such as an Artificial Intelligence engine. I think that may come even quicker as the power behind an artificial brain might be able to create thinks at a rate much faster than humans.
I guess even before the fact of the artificial intelligence creating its own “content” so to speak, would the Artificial Intelligence Engine develop its own “tastes” in art and music. I honestly don’t know… but it is an interesting thought.
What do you think. I guess it would be good to hear two things.
1. Your first thoughts when you read today’s topic.
2. And what you think about the realm of creativity and artificial intelligence.
Once again welcome to What if Wednesday and I look forward to getting your brain juices flowing!
Stuart

I’m not sure if Artificial Intelligence is something we can just create. Perhaps one day AI will spontaneously evolve from something the Artificial Life guys are working on. If you’re interested, check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_life for further info.

Hi John,
I guess this is true, perhaps this might be part of an underlying problem, it might just begin to develop and learn without us actually realising it at the time.
Thanks for the link I will check it out.

When I saw this article, my first thought was, “Oh, good, this should be interesting.” It did not disappoint! Must admit, I never thought about this before. If such a being could be created with the same capacity as a human, I would tend to think it would not surpass the creativity humans possess.

Hi Karen, I am glad that you found the post interesting. As I said in my original post it will take me a few weeks to really fine tune how I want to run What if Wednesdays but I will get there.
Back to the task at hand though. I like your thoughts but I am curious, why do yo uthink it would not surpass the human ability for creativity? As a note I am not challenging you here by any means I am just curious to hear more of your thoughts.

The whole artificial intelligence thing still worries me a bit, maybe I’ve just seen and read too many horror stories about it.
Have to admit, would be interesting to see what limits an AI being had in regards to creativity and ingenuity. I would hope that humans still had the advantage in this area!
I kind of hope that AI takes off after my time, I wouldn’t want to see people losing their jobs to computers and everything becoming automated.

I have to agree with you there Erin, however my inner geek also wants to see just what AI could be capable of.
What can I say, my inner geek rules my brain hahaha.

The thing with machines running “intelligence” on their own, whether creativity or technicality-wise would be that humans would have less say on how or where this “creative musings” or “intellectual exercises” would lead to. After all, it’s not like programmers could easily define key human issues like ethics and life values now, could they?

Did my previous comment in this post come through? I just posted one and I don’t see it here… I’m really interested about how this discussion goes.

Hi Keithmaxx,
Yup your comments did come through. You know it is interesting you mention that point of ethics and life values. I have often had the weird thought that, if an artificial intelligence was ever created, to teach it that sort of thing we would have to put it through primary and high school so to speak.
I know… I know… I do have some weird thoughts LOL.
Stuart
Oh you’re not the only one, Stuart, though putting a machine through human schooling would be… weird.

Haha well I am glad to hear that, life without weird thoughts would be utterly boring in my opinion.
Ahh while it would be weird… it got you thinking didn’t it? *grins*

haha I can’t believe I missed this post!
I prefer to take on a philosophical outlook on such a subject. I think that while there are an infinite number of creative possibilities that eventually, we humans will come across them – maybe not in our generation but in general, as humans, we will come across all creative possibilities that will ever exist.
Now the great thing about artificial intelligence is that it would have the ability to hold more information about what has ‘been done’ as well, it would be able to ‘calculate’ all these different possibilities and almost be able to pick out (as if from a list) what hasn’t been done.
I dunno if that makes any sense… I think could just be rambling.. lol

Funny that you mention that, I had a similar thought when I was pondering what to write.
I have to say the idea still scares me LOL *shudders* yet annoyingly at the same time still interests me too *hehe*.
