Canon 1000D Digital SLR – A dream come true!
Please be advised: This blog is no longer being posted on or updated and is now only a static copy of my old Wordpress blog. To see some of my newer work please see SCRyan.com - My Personal Site. Or alternatively you can contact me on twitter.
Following this post you might want to check out my First Impressions of the Canon EOS 1000D or my Final thoughts on the Canon EOS 1000D.

I have to say, after blogging for a little over a 12 months, I got a wonderful surprise at the end of last week. I received an email from Canon Australia in regards to a new program that they are running.
It seems that Canon Australia has recognised the value of informal blogger reviews to people who are searching for information on prospective product purchases. They have launched a new program appropriately called “Canon’s Blogger Product Review Program” you can see the full details on the Canon Australia EOS blog. In short, they will provide selected Australian bloggers with a product that they can play with and use for a maximum of three months (after which time it must be returned to Canon). The blogger may then (if they decide, although they are not required to) write a review on the product and share their thoughts.
I was amazed to find out that a company had a) found my blog in the first place and b) selected me to participate if I desired. Naturally I decided that I would love to give this a shot (pun intended) and the new camera arrived on my doorstep just yesterday afternoon.
I have always wanted a Digital SLR camera as I really do love taking photos. I would also love to be able to spend more time taking some really detailed and interesting pictures, so for me this really is a dream come true. As this will be the first digital SLR I have used I will be looking at the camera from a beginner’s perspective. I will do several post about the camera, some of these may include topics such as my first impressions, ease of use for someone new to digital SLRs, a few photo shoots, and whatever else pops into my mind at the time.
A lot of the photos I take will of course be thrown up into my gallery so that you can all see them there. So keep your eyes peeled in the coming days to get a sneak peek at some of my first shots.
In advance I want to say a huge thank you to Canon Australia for the opportunity they have decided to give me.
So, has anything like this happened to anyone else from having a blog, such as companies contacting you to trial new products or other opportunities to try something that you have always wanted?

I frankly can see no reason to choose 1000d /xs over 450D / xsi, price different is too small considering the features. Here is a comparison table for you:

mels last blog post..Ricoh GR Digital II Creative Set
Hi Mel,
I guess I can’t really answer that one. I am very new to the realm of Digital SLRs however I will see if one of the staff from Canon can provide me a little insight.
Cheers
Stuart
Hi Mel,
I just got the following response from Anna who works for a Canon Australia’s PR agency, hope it helps you:
“The EOS 450D offers greater creative control for users. For example, they can select more AF points (9 vs. 7) and it also has additional options such as spot metering which is not available on the EOS 1000D.
We have found that the $300 price difference between the two models makes quite a big difference for a lot of people, especially those wanting to upgrade from a digital still camera and not yet requiring such creative control.”
Cheers
Stuart
[edit] added clarification that Anna actually works for Canon Australia’s PR agency not directly for Canon Australia, my apologies.
Hey Mel/Stuart,
I happen to have a 450D at home, and am also taking part in the review program – my 1000D arrived today!
I doubt I’ll be saying much different from Anna’s summary, but I’ll be comparing the two on my site eventually too, which may or may not be of interest.
Cheers,
Tim
Hi Tim,
That is awesome I was hoping to hear a comparison between the two as my workmate has the 450D as well. I will be keeping a close eye on your blog (which has an awesome design if I may say).
If you drop me a line (I have just added a contact form to the top menu), I will be happy to link through to you when you do your comparison.
Cheers
Stuart
I’m still very new to cameras myself but I LOVE the shots you’ve taken with your Canon.
I have a Canon PowerShot A720 IS and I’m wondering, what makes a Digital SLR camera? What are the differences? How is the camera you have superior?
I have a bunch of other photography related questions but I should probably Google things like artifacts, lighting, and etc. myself. lol
Rebecca Laffar-Smiths last blog post..Getting Hits – ‘Build it and they will come?’
Hi Rebecca,
A digital SLR camera is a camera that uses traditional photographic methods rather than a fully automated point and shoot camera.
For me, the major differences are that you can change lenses for different uses and due to this can get far better zoom. Also an SLR camera gives you *comlpete* control over all the different settings surrounding the capture of a photo.
I don’t *actually* know the full technical details or how to describe the differences but I would recommend this Wikipedia entry –> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSLR#Brief_difference_between_a_DSLR_and_a_Digicam it explains it in full technical goodness.
