Why do you blog?
Readers please be advised: This blog is no longer being posted on. If you wish please visit my new blog Eccentric Reality. Or alternatively you can contact me on twitter.
At work last week, the topic of blogging came up in conversation and my manager asked me a rather simple question, “Why do you blog?”
Instantly I got a blank look on my face and I was unable to provide a valid or descriptive reason as to why I actually do blog. My response was really not all that much better than “…because I can!”
After having pondered this question for the last week, however I believe I have come up with a response and so I thought I would share this with you, and then ask the same question of you.
I blog becuase it gives me an outlet for my ideas! So much of my life is taken up by computers and other geeky things, I live and breathe technology every minute of every day. Blogging however, gives me an outlet that I had been searching for a while and had not found until a year ago.
Blogging gives me the opportunity to take all those random little thoughts that I have that make me unique as a person and share them with the world. I guess it is a form of expression much like painting is for a painter or playing an instrument is for a musician. Blogging is a form of expression that I was able to take up within the constraints of my life at the time, and thus far I have been loving it.
So now I pass this question on. Why do YOU blog, and if you don’t blog, is there a reason you have chosen not to, or is it something that you have just never ventured into?
Stuart

No one has ever asked me that question before. When I set up my website initially, I wanted to use it to share with people the wisdom of love quotations and later on when the option came to have a blog, I set it up with the aim to share with people about love and inspiration. At time I wanted to give up but my strength to move on comes from the email that my readers sent me once in a while.
BKs last blog post..Beauty is in Your Heart and Soul
Hi BK,
That is awesome to hear, I have to say in the last year there really is a “community” type feeling among bloggers and sometimes they really reach out to you when you are feeling down.
I guess as another thought it really does help you get your feelings out, and for me I find that those heart felt blog posts are the ones that move me the most.
Stuart
Originally it was for SEO reasons, then it was for the money, now it’s because I love it so much.
Sires last blog post..How To Deal With Rude And Obnoxious Commentators
I swear if I didn’t blog or make geeky things, I’d have to learn to drink and go down the pub instead which would make mrs andy go mental and kill me. so I blog for my life and to not be an alcoholic
Andy Baileys last blog post..Some important things to note for Wordpress plugin Authors
Stuart – Good question. I’m sure many would have been asked the same question from their managers, parents, and even friends. My answer to them is because – I love it !!!!
Marks last blog post..7 Ways to Serve the Best French Fries
There are a couple of reasons. I suppose the main one would be because we think we have some interesting things to say about weight loss. We’re all a little tubby and we’re all working on getting in shape so we look good naked, continue to live healthy lives and because it feels better to be able to walk up stairs without feeling like we’re going to pass out.
Oh, that and fame….
Paunchinesss last blog post..Win an Apple® iPod® Shuffle
Heya all,
@Sire – Hehe that is awesome to hear, you started out for one thing and have grown to evolve and enjoy it so much more.
@Andy – Perhaps you should get Mrs Andy into blogging as well *hehe*. But if blogging (and writing AWESOME plugins) keeps you out of trouble then this can only be a good thing.
@Mark – I tried telling them that but they kept asking me why… it is a hard one… perhaps something that only a fellow blogger can understand.
@Paunchiness – I raise my hand, I am a little on the plus side (which is something that I *really* have to get to work on). So I think I will be visiting you a lot more often in the near future. *hehe*.

Just got an email on Entrecard from a user that was unable to post a comment.
Karen and Gerard from http://www.zemeks.blogspot.com Say:
I blog to promote my book about my dad but then found it to be a creative outlet for me and enjoyed making new friends online and reading about other people’s lives on their blogs. It’s stimulating and fun. I really enjoy it and do not blog for money.

That is awesome to hear, and I have to agree on blogging being stimulating and fun too.
Thanks for the visit.
Stuart
I like to write and what better avenue than through blogging where you can sit down and let your ideas just flow. It’s a form of release and a way to interact with people that you’d never otherwise give the time of day to. We won’t say hi to a stranger on the street and start a conversation. Blogging allows us to do that.
Robins last blog post..I hate tourists
Hi Robin,
That is a really interesting way of looking at that. And you have just given me an idea for another blog post (so many ideas, so little time hehe).
Thanks for dropping by.
Stuart
Stuart – I blog to show what I know and what I’m good at. I also have an outdoors blog that is for tips and tricks. Mostly I just blog for fun with the hopes that my posts will help others.
Justins last blog post..Entrecard is For Sale
Hi Justin that is good to hear.
It is funny, a year ago I started with the same goal, and I am still trying to find that niche. I guess my other blog (Geeky Habitat) I do this a little more, but I do not dedicate anywhere near as much time to that as I should.
Stuart
I blog because I’m passionate about my subject and I want to share it with everyone. And because if I didn’t I would talk people to death about it until they hated me…giving them the option to check out the blog was a much better choice.
Talens last blog post..Campaign Manager Drowns in Bangkok Canal
Hi Talen,
*hehe* you made me laugh. I guess that is a really good idea, what made you think of that as a good option?
Stuart
I blog for no reason other than I’m addicted to it now. I started with a personal journal when I got my heart broken pretty badly a long time ago… and kept it because I had gotten so used to talking about my life online. And much like Talen, I don’t like talking to people only about what I want to talk about – but having a blog gives me the opportunity to get it out of my system
fragilehearts last blog post..Flickr Friday: Paws up
Heya Fragileheart,
I guess I am the same, I find it a really good place to get my ideas out of my head and onto paper so to speak. And blogging does get rather addicting doesnt it.
Oh and it is not good to hear that you had your heart broken, how long ago was that?
Stuart
In my pre-Stuart days, I didn’t read any blogs and though I knew of them, couldn’t understand why they seemed so popular. After meeting Stuart, it wasn’t long until I found out about this blog and became a regular reader (and commentator). I enjoyed having my say through comments and when Stuart offered to set up my own blog for me, I was happy to get started! For me, though it took a while to get my head around everything, I’ve mostly enjoyed finding a reason to write more. Like others who have commented, I’ve also really liked getting random thoughts and ideas out of my head and being able to express and share these with anyone interested. It’s also been really good finding other blogs that I enjoy for different reasons and being able to “meet” new people. I think as time goes on, I’m only becoming more addicted!
Erins last blog post..Junk boxes
Hehe I am glad that I could help you get your writing fingers back into action Erin *mwah*.
And as for random thoughts and ideas, I don’t think anyone on this planet needed an avenue to release that more than you *hehehe*.
(Oh go on you know I am kidding, I looooove your randomness, though sometimes it can be a tad disturbing).
Stuart
I have decided to take that as a compliment! lol
Erins last blog post..Junk boxes
LOL anyone else’s thoughts on this?
Stuart
Hi Stuart, not to worry! It was almost 11 years ago now! Plus, my heart has been mended by the most amazing man ever – if only we could live in the same country together. But oh well, we keep plunking along!!
fragilehearts last blog post..In need of some time
Hi Fragileheart,
I guess that was a long time ago, and it is good to hear that one of the male species came to the rescue and helped your heart mend.
I guess you have to take what you get. But anyhoo that is awesome to hear.
