First Stable Release – WP-HoneyPot Wordpress Plugin

7

Readers please be advised: This blog is no longer being posted on. If you wish please visit my new blog Eccentric Reality. Or alternatively you can contact me on twitter.

What on EARTH is WP-Honeypot? Well… For those of you that are bloggers who are using Wordpress to spread your random thoughts and who may be using plugins such as Bad Behavior to help target spam caused by bots and comment spammers, I have just release a plugin which I hope will complement these nicely… A.K.A. WP-HoneyPot!

A while ago I installed Bad Behaviour and noticed that it now makes use of the Project HoneyPot http:BL (a blacklist which is created from catching email and comment spammers using a trap, dubbed a ‘honeypot’).

However in order to be able to use the blacklist you need to be a contributing member to Project HoneyPot. In order to make this really simple for people using Wordpress Blogs I decided to create a plugin which I have dubbed WP-HoneyPot which is esentially a simple plugin to add Project HoneyPot traps to your blog to help catch these spammers and comment spammers.

The plugin has undergone extensive testing by quite a few people and has now been released as the first stable release (1.0). The Plugin details are as follows:

Anyhoo I just thought it about time that I officially do a release of this plugin to everyone. Also if you have any questions please do let me know as I would like to build some FAQs to surround the plugin as I know it can be a tad confusing.

Cheers
Stuart ;)

If you are using/will be using WP-HoneyPot and you think it is a good idea, please consider helping me spread the word, it might be to stumble or digg this post, writing about this post, or anything really. I would *greatly* appreciate any support.

Thanks so mcuh for your time and effort to create this plugin! I have been a member of The Project Honeypot since late 2005 and with your wonderful plugin and others I have found out a way to drastically drop my comment spam in wordpress and help fight spam!

Will the current version work on 2.7x or are you working on an update?

  7. Stuart says:

    Hi Trisha and Carol,
Thanks so much sorry for not replying, something went really astray with your comments and I never got notified *sigh*.

Great to hear you are using it successfully, I would love to see if there are any new hooks coming up in the new versions to expand where it can randomise.

@Terence – I have been using it without issue on the 2.7 branch since the release of 2.7 so it will work just fine. However I have just not had time to officially certify it. But I have had no issues.

    Cheers
    Stuart
