Fat Buster Friday – McDonalds Breakfast

Welcome to another Fat Buster Friday… I have to say I am starting to feel like this is becoming a regular weekly segment of how badly I am doing in my mission to bust that extra fat off my gut. However I am just about finished up with uni this semester so I am hoping that I will be able to spend more time on this mission.
Anyhoo this morning was a particularly bad one for me, I was running short of time as I slept in a little bit and so I decided to get brekky once I got into work. So I thought I would get one of my standard Maccas breakfasts to show you just what you can consume in a sitting at the golden arches.
Firstly you might look at that and think that it is an excessive breakfast, however for me if I eat any less at McDonalds I start feeling hungry again only a few hours later. So on this mornings menu we had, two hashbrowns, a Sausage McMuffin and a serving of hotcakes.
Before I go into the glorious details of each I just want to give you a heads up. As a male of my particular age group, weight and activity level I should be consuming ~2000 calories per day at maximum if I wish to loose weight or around ~2200 if I want to maintain my weight. If you are unsure of what a calorie is it really is not necessary to know for the purposes of this post but well worth looking up some details on calories if you have the time.
So onto the fun stuff. If you take a look at the image at the bottom of this post which I took from the McDonalds Website after dragging and dropping my selections of food onto it you will see that my standard Maccas meal is FAR greater than what I should be eating in one sitting.
As a little summary you will see the total intake for my one sitting breakfast was ~1213 calories. As a percentage of my total daily intake (worked out at 2000 as I wish to lose weight) this comes in at almost 61% of my daily required intake of energy. Among other things I also took in a whopping 50 grams of pure fat, almost 48 grams of sugar (~12 teaspoons) and finally 1778mg of sodium (salt) which is ~71% of my daily intake requirement (based on the amounts stated in this article).
All in all to put this into perspective… I SHOULD NEVER AGAIN EAT A MACCAS BREAKFAST. Oh… and for the record I was feeling seedy all day from having that for breakfast… and I seem to recall that I do every time I eat McDonalds.
So what are your thoughts, perhaps you could pop over to the McDonalds Australia site and calculate your last McDonalds meal, I would be curious to see your results.

I think basically if you want to lose weight you just avoid places like McDonalds. Nothing there that is really suitable, and even with what you had there, its using up approx 1/2 your daily recommended calories.
I actually don’t mind McBreakfasts – good when you’re travelling, certainly better than paying through the nose in a hotel.
However, a McDonald’s Big Breakfast was one of the worst things I’ve ever eaten – mind you the massive hangover I had that day might have had something to do with it.
Ians last blog post..Things you should not do when faking a sickie
Hi Ian,
It is so true, they are a really convenient place (and at least I know when I eat there the chances of getting food poisoning are at least pretty slim).
LOL I dare to imagine, a hangover AND a McDonalds big brekky hangover… EWWWW lol.

Yeah, McDonald’s is a major sin on the weight loss journey. BTW, the reason you feel hungry so soon after a MickeyD meal is because it’s ALL HI-GI. That means it’s stacked with preservatives, wheat, and white sugars. Highly processed and zero nutrition.
Basically, what you consumed was a tasty chunk of the stuff that’ll go right to your hips. Or gutt. Or where ever you find you store the most fat. Still, it IS tasty. lol
My trainer told me a couple of weeks ago that it would take THREE full energy workouts at the gym to burn off ONE cherry ripe. I HATE her. lol

Rebecca, I know it is a capital sin (and I don’t think I will be doing it again in the near future LOL).
Ahh and that is good to know, I thought it might have been due to the sugar rush and then corresponding plummet but that makes more sense.
Wowsers, that is kinda evil so I guess no yummy stuff = the path to freedom?

“I thought it might have been due to the sugar rush and then corresponding plummet but that makes more sense.” I think that is what HI-GI actually means to us mortals. Maybe. Don’t quote me on that cause I’m no doctor. lol
“no yummy stuff = the path to freedom?”
Yes, according to my extensive research that does appear to be the case. I’d rather be fat and die young then healthy and without Noms.

I might have to look into that, now that you mention it that does ring a bell (I have some books on GI around) I might have to look into it.
And I agree, bring on the fatty food haha (no… no I wanna be healthy lol.

I love their hash brown… no one does it better!
I agree Michael, they do a pretty mean hashbrown. Though they only taste good when they are freshly deep fried hehe.
Stuart
I love mcdonalds but I stay away!!
Yeah Maccas is bad when you trying to loose weight, best thing to eat if you gotta go there, eat say the hash browns that you like, then get a plain muffin.
Yeah the low GI stuff is what makes you feel full after you have eaten, i havent been to maccas for awhile but you used to be able to get the yoghurt thing with the muesli on it, that would keep you from getting hungry longer as the oats are low GI
Simple page for you to look at http://www.alfitness.com.au/article/aID/64/Low-GI-foods.-Perfect-for-weight-loss
I just don’i like fat food so much, I think McD’ is still unreachable for my pocket. Yet, I never heard someone said it is healthy and safe to consume such fastfood even it is delicious.
inetBuzzs last blog post..How to use 8 Anti Spywares Together (With Single Click)
@Gina, that is probably a brilliant and wise idea hehe.
@Trisha I had a look at the yogurt with the muesli a while ago and I seem to remember that it was not much better as far as healthy food goes. I seem to recall it had a LOT of fat. And thanks for the link that has refreshed my memory on how it all works (why does it all have to be so complex LOL).
@inetBuzz – I agree no-one ever said it was healthy… which makes me wonder… why couldn’t all the awesome tasting food be healthy hahaha.

I have watched a documentary film about a man whose goal is to prove that eating at Mc D regularly is really unhealthy. I watched that film a long time ago and I’m not really sure if he ate his meals at Mc D for a month straight. The outcome of course is that he gained weight in just a matter of weeks. The film is entitled “Super size me”. I really like this movie. Very hilarious.

Heya Bobby,
I remember when I first saw Supersize me… lol what a riot. Interestingly enough it brought up a lot of interesting points (most of them against Micky D’s lol).
Like Bobby I think it was an awesome movie… if you haven’t seen it you should… now… LOL.
