I had the day off yesterday and decided that I wanted to get out and do something I had not done in a long while. I had no idea what this might be, so I armed myself with a digital camera and went for a walk to get some lunch.
On the way there I passed Camperdown Memorial Cemetery, I had not visited the cemetery since I was doing art in my early highschool days and so I decided I would go in.
As I was walking around, looking at the graves, some of which were in excess of 150 years old I was honestly in awe, there was a surreal and peaceful feeling that I cannot really describe to anyone unless you had been there. During my walk around and taking photos I bumped into a gentleman who (like me) was there to enjoy the peace and quiet and also take photos. Granted he was much more of a professional and was taking high quality shots focusing on things like light and shadow etc.
Anyhoo as I mentioned while I was walking around in between all the graves I felt something, a sense of peace and tranquility I guess would be the best way to describe it. So, I thought that I would share the photos with you all.

Hi Stuart! The images were great! I feel the same as you when I venture into old cemeteries. You never know who you’re going to find in there. The ones at Port Botany and Vaucluse take a while to get around but if you’re out that way, it’s well worth the visit. Take Care - Peter

I just wanted to add my impressions from when Stuart and I went to the cemetary together.
I did find it peaceful, but it also made me feel sad and made me reflect too. I this cemetary made me feel sadder because of how so many of the gravestones were cracked or broken, just seemed sad that the people were so forgotten. And was also a bit depressing seeing the graves of children or people who died really young. There was a woman who died just a year after being married, that affected me.
Anyway, don’t mean to be so depressing! I did enjoy going and took some photos of my own. Was good seeing the history there and it does have a real atmosphere.
Speaking of history - anyone have any idea where the oldest cemetery in Australia is? Thinking it must be somewhere in Sydney…
